The legendary Schuh (shoe) story started in 1818 when Johan Ritschard bought some land south of Höheweg at Interlaken and built a house for a food and beverage business.
In 1885 Christian Schuh bought the house and in 1899, Jacob Friedrich Schuh started using the family name when he created the famous “Schuh Lady” logo. A skilled pastry chef, Jacob devoted himself to his love of chocolates and served delicious confectionery and pastries to local people and to tourists which resulted in Schuh’s reputation spreading across Europe.
In 1910 the Schuh family sold their interest in the business but the “Schuh’s” reputation was maintined until 1955, when a clear vision to its future, Fritz Beutler bought the enterprise and set about renovating the 22 bedrooms and extending the kitchen and dinning facilities. In the 1950s the former German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer said, “The Schuh is always good.” That is still the case today.
Fritz (junior) and his wife Hedy continued the father’s good work by introducing and international dimension to the culinary art on offer at the “Schuh”.
Finally in 2003, Jürg and Cecilia Kirchhofer, also gourmets and chocolate connoisseurs, purchased the business with a solemn pledge that while the “Schuh” was in their custody ints international reputation for high quality and excellent service would be faithfully maintained and never compromised – and so the tradition of the “Schuh” continues.
In the 1950s the former German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer said, “The Schuh is always good.” That is still the case today.

Once upon a time there was a charming young lady who was as beautiful and graceful as a princess. People came from far and wide to her tiny and high-class shop full of the wonderful chocolate specialities she made herself. When the time came for the young girl to marry, they held a competition in the village. Young men came from throughout the land to court the beautiful lady, and to woo her with daring tricks, expensive gifts and to serenade her with music. But she finally chose as the prince of her heart the cobbler who presented her with a beautiful shoe made from the finest chocolate.
